Late-Night Adventures

If you re one of those late-night prowlers that can t stand getting out into the dark of the night, I m sure you re going to have some problem in Barcelona . A really big problem.

Say for instance, you are in search for an enjoyable night out on the town, the big problem lies in choosing what would be most to your liking from among all that Barcelona has to offer. In a nutshell, Barcelona nights is all about fun, fun, fun, and one can simply go insane just ticking off the choices on how to achieve it in one night. Even the most hedonistic man s standards for pleasure and enjoying the night away will be challenged in this great city!

But I vow to make things easier for you so let me help you with your problem. To start off, you could drop into one of the city's many champagne or cocktail bars. There are many that abound especially in the center of the city where most of the shops are concentrated. I m inclined to recommend for you the Bar Marsella, a bar and a cocktail lounge that will ensure you quiet relaxation for a night out with friends.

And for an even quieter night, you need not leave your hotel room! Playing table games is a typical Spanish activity (Tute (using cards) and Dominos are both very popular) and so why not check out the juegos de casino online? Barcelona’s hotels are generally very well equipped and so you will more than likely have access to the internet from your room (if not, you’ll be a stone’s throw away from an internet café). Invite your holiday buddies, enjoy the mini bar, surf sites such as WilsonsPicks.com (a great site for NFL and NBA precision picks from the handicapper William Cinco – maybe so great you win more holiday spends!), plan your Barcelona excursions and for a little excitement, venture to the glamorous online poker tables! You never know, you may even win some holiday spends!

However, for the natural dancers who can t resist moving to every music beat, no problemo amigo! The music beats in this city are as diverse as the ambience and the tongues and the cultures that abound here, and there s a tempo sure to cater to a variety of tastes.

For a striking example, there s the El Ensanche. In here, the modernist part of the city exists, paradoxically side to side, with three completely different ambiences and still, not ever mixing up. You'll find here: one, locals for the lovers of design, two, for the traditionalists and three, for the young and informal ones. At Pla de Catalunya there are even some charming terraces, specially frequented by young people and tourists.

So go ahead and take your pick! Everywhere around the city are found discotheques, clubs, bars, cafés, and dance halls especially in the vicinity south of Avd. Diagonal between Calle Pau Claris and Calle Aribau . In particular, the area of Avd. del Tibidabo , at the end of the Tramvia Blau (Blue tram), there are music and dance spots which offer a more laid back atmosphere and are popular in the summer. The Olympic Village in Poble Nou has a good selection of bars and discotheques too while the Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) on Montju provides a striking background for one of the most unique night spots.

Above the Avd. Diagonal on Calle Santaló and nearby, in the vicinity of the Pla Francesc Maci , a more high class and subdued, not to say expensive, selection of night spots can be found. A little further you will find Santalo - San Gervasi where the streets of Santaló and Mariano Cubi cross each other in a very fashionable manner. You will find the highest concentration of fashionable locals in all of the city, right here. Your public in this venue is young and beautiful, the likes who are up for a good romp inside the bars and out in the streets to the tune of good music, good drinks and lots of fun. Furthermore, at Plaza Francesc Maciá you'll meet the cream of the crop of Barcelona 's night life, ready to blow your head away.

For those who prefer to enjoy their music without having to move their bodies amidst the glistening sweat of the crowd, you have an alternative. The best thing to do in cases like this is to head off to one of the city's many live music clubs, offering almost daily shows in every style, from jazz and blues to African music, classical, and the lovely flamenco.

And don’t forget if you enjoying the flamenco so much - and your stay in Barcelona is long enough - you can always invest in options such as Malaga car rental and have a weekend trip to Andalucia – the home of this typical Spanish dance! But back to Barcelona…

For those who are not so much into dancing, for visitors who feel the need to express their own musical talents through carrying out a tune or two, you can try out a karaoke club. Sing a song and blast the night away, just take care of those tonsils, too cold a beer equals a raspy voice.

In addition to all this, you should also bear in to consideration other attractions of Barcelona by night: there s the theatre, the cinema, the popular fiestas that dot the calendar and the other outdoor clubs with music for all tastes. Locals are concentrated at the squares of Plaza del Sol and Plaza Rius i Taulet . Everyone finds the right thing here, whether you are looking for a fashionable local bearing the latest design, or just a charming summer-terrace to slump into. And then there s Gracia , a blessing of blessings. The Gr district has a myriad of small night spots with lots of personality and attitude, plus a good number of outdoor cafés in the squares. La Barceloneta is also worth of another consideration. Originally this was a district of fishermen, but during the last years there has grown an infrastructure that offers a variety of sumptuous gastronomy. You'll find equally elegant and extravagant fish-restaurants at this fashionable harbor tavern, visited specially by the young ones even at late hours.

Wherever your preferences may take you, just bear in mind that Barcelona is teeming with the most wondrous of Night Time Venues. The city is simply bursting to the seams with pubs and fun places of all sorts including even hedonistic gay bars and frenetic clubs. In here, the whirr of live jazz, rock, flamenco and salsa is never far away.

You can also check out Calle Aribau and Calle Muntaner, some very lively strips at night. You can try as well the Carrer de Sant Pau 65; this is where Hemingway used to slump over an absinthe in this bar, which has been in business since 1820. This place is renowned for its specialty in absenta (absinthe), a beverage hard to find because of its supposed narcotic qualities. In here, your glass of absinthe comes with a lump of sugar, a fork and a little bottle of mineral water. Hold the sugar on the fork, over your glass, and drip the water onto the sugar so that it dissolves into the absinthe, which then turns yellow. The result should give you a warm glow. Its opening hours are Monday to Thursday, from 10:00pm - 2:00am, and Friday to Saturday at 10:00pm-3:00am. All over Barcelona , the calendar is always crammed with holidays and festivals, and Barcelonins are usually buzzing with the anticipation of an upcoming event.

However, if the fever to party is too soon for you or you d like to bring the party to your place, you might also begin at a good restaurant. You can choose from among a wide and varied range that includes authentic food from around the world, in addition to the traditional Mediterranean cuisine of the city.

If eating outside is still too much, try shopping late night with their late general stores. There is VIPS (Tel. 93 317 48 05; Rambla de Catalunya ; open 9am - 3am daily), an import from Madrid. Another one to try also is the popular 7-Eleven shop (Tel. 93 318 88 63; Carrer de Roger de Lluria 2; open 7am - 3am daily). Need photocopies or films developed at 5am, for whatever peculiar reasons you have, or if you re that workaholic? You can head for Workcenter (Tel. 902 11 50 11; Carrer de Roger de Lluria 2), a printing and reproduction centet that is open 24 hours a day without fail.

If you want to enjoy of a special ocassion, like a bachelor party, there are many options not only in Barcelona, but also in Madrid where you will experience a fun "Despedidas de soltero en Madrid" in the best clubs of this exciting city!

So, after reading all are you excited for Barcelona nightlife? If so then why not enjoy a whole summer there? Expensive? NO! Think about the possibility of working in the city. Work abroad is a great thing to be able to add to a CV and although in your home country, bar work may not be the most exciting addition to a resume, doing it abroad, especially if you learn the language whilst there is highly regarded – it shows you have confidence to live and learn in a foreign country – a great attribute! As well as good wages (and free entry to all good bars connected to your own!), you may be able to claim a tax refund too! All this whilst enjoying a disco, sunny summer in Barcelona!
