Casa Batllo
Barcelona is not only teeming with modernist work but also futuristic work. This one has no single straight line at its front; even the walls are curved and seem to be covered by leather.
Casa Calvet
Considered as the most traditional work of this master of extravagance, which is the reason why Gaudí received for this building his one and only honorable mention by the city of Barcelona .
Palau Güell
A masterpiece by Eusebi G with its cupola, stairways and impressive windows that seem of giant dimensions, but its base is actually only 18 x 12 meters.

La Sagrada Familia
La Sagrada Familia is truly awe-inspiring as this great cathedral is inspired by gothic style and yet it maintains to be a landmark of modern architecture. This is the life's work, the magnum opus of Barcelona 's favorite artist son, Antoni Gaudí . Antoni Gaudi was one of the most important modernist style architects worldwide. Many of his most extraordinary works are to be found in Barcelona . Gaudí died before he could finish his biggest and most beloved project, with galleries that should have room for 1500 singers, 700 children and 5 organs.
And yet, even without that, he had already achieved the magnificent spires of the unfinished cathedral that imprint themselves against the sky with swelling outlines inspired by the holy mountain Montserrat . These are encrusted with a tangle of amazing sculptures.
With Gaudí s death in 1926, controversy has continually dogged the building program. Through time, the southwestern facade, with four more towers, is almost done, and the nave, begun in 1978, is progressing.

The Pla de la Sagrada Família has become a very important tourist and commercial nucleus because of the cathedral and the throngs of visitors it attracts. It is situated between two of the main streets of the Carrer Mallorca and Carrer Proven . It owes its name to the Temple of the Holy Family. The square has been remodeled in order to make it wider to the needs now imposed by the number of visitors to the church.

The Avinguda Diagonal
This is considered by many as the commercial center of Barcelona . The Diagonal, together with Passeig de Gr , is one of the most prestigious streets in Barcelona . An extensive section of the Avinguda Diagonal is dedicated to commerce: large stores, shopping centers and famous-name establishments. It is also an area of restaurants and cafeterias, and of the offices of large official bodies and major corporations.
|
 |
The Avinguda Diagonal cuts through the city at an angle from east to west, stretching from the seafront to the very edge of the city. This characteristic thoroughfare conserves buildings of great historical and architectural value and representative monuments of the history of Catalonia . Amongst these are parts occupied by the various faculties of the University of Barcelona and the Polytechnic. This area is also known as the University Zone in which one can visit the Royal Palace of Pedralbes , with its large gardens open to the public. Then there s also the mansion of Can Terrades , also popularly known as the Casa de les Punxes (the 'house of thorns'), a neo-Gothic building situated between Carrer del Bruch and Carrer de Llúria .

The portal of Finca Miralles
Created for another friend and sponsor, industrialist Eusebi G dedicated this small work in an interesting contrast to " Casa Calvet, " which was made during the same period of time.
Bellesguard
This is the Landmark of Catalonia . This gothic building, formerly summer residence of King Martí I, was modified by Gaudí in pleasant harmony with the original.
Colegio Teresiano
When he built this school, Gaudí was influenced by Gothic style and created this masterpiece of simple and clear lines.
Casa Vincens
Gaudí's first architectonic work, the Casa Vincens is a milestone in his career. The building resembles the palace of an Arabian prince, and was made for the owner of a tile factory - material of which Gaudí made ample use.

La Pedrera
Formerly called the Casa Mil , this is another of Gaudí s masterpieces. La Pedrera was built between 1905 and 1910 as a combined apartment and office block. Today, it's better known now as La Pedrera (the quarry) because of its uneven, grey stone facade that ripples around a street corner. It creates a wave effect that is further emphasized by elaborate wrought-iron balconies. The irregularly curved walls of this building remind one of dunes in the desert.
|
 |
When La Pedrera was made, the building was too futurist for most people, and gained the nickname La Pedrera , "the quarry." On summer weekend nights, the roof is eerily lit and open for spectacular views of Barcelona . One floor below the roof is a modest museum dedicated to Gaudí's work. Visitors can tour the building and go up to the roof, where giant multi-colored chimney pots protrude like medieval knights. Today, it is considered a landmark work of modern architecture.
